This Week’s Awesome List!

Happy Easter Monday!  I hope you had a wonderful weekend and holiday.

I certainly enjoyed spending time with my family out of town, and eating lots – LOTS – of delicious food.  My mom’s version of “Angeled” Eggs (see mine, here) and the big platter of fruit (thanks, Grandma!) were my unrivaled favorites of the day.

As much of a blessing as it was to be able to focus on very important stuff (I’m talking about family, of course, not food… as important as good food is!) I didn’t get a chance to sneak in any work over the weekend like I normally do.  Hence, no new recipes ready to go, no posts waiting in the wings for Monday morning.

So here I am, on Monday morning, thinking about what I’d like to put out into the world today.  Well, I think the answer is obvious: Something that I like.  Hey, I can do that!

Personally, I’ve always been a fan of happy little “favorites” lists on other blogs.  It gives me the opportunity to learn about the blogger (whose quirkily-awesome personality usually comes out more in such posts); find out about other awesome blogs or websites I didn’t know about; discover workouts, recipes, outfits, etc. I’d never seen; and learn about sweet products I hadn’t yet tried, from an opinion I valued, without forking over any money of my own.

Perhaps you’ll really enjoy this list, and it shall forthwith be a weekly staple of my blog.  Most likely, at least for now, I’ll spend a week or two collecting a journal of personal favorites, and give you a really awesome List of Awesome once or twice a month.

I’m excited about today’s, anyway, so let’s get into it!  But first:  Two questions.  If you respond in the comments, I’ll love you forever – and, let me tell you, that’s a pretty big deal.

Question 1:  What was your favorite part of the weekend, and if it was the food, what kind was it?

Question dos:  Give me one of YOUR favorite things! I really want to know about more awesome stuff.

P.S. This isn’t a sponsored post. Today, I’m just sharing things I love with you!

FitCakes {First} Awesome List

Quest Chips.

I tried Quest Chips for the first time, recently, and I’m a little freaked out by how much I’m into them.  I was very skeptical of these protein chips before I tried them.  But now I can tell you:  They’re really truly delicious, and they taste like real chips!

So here’s the thing:  I’m not a huge snacker, and I don’t like to munch mindlessly (it used to be an issue with me and giant boxes of cereal?) but sometimes I’ll still get a little nuts for things like popcorn.  If I’m really craving something salty and crunchy, I can get into the popcorn like nobody’s business.  Unfortunately, for me, I don’t always stop while I’m ahead, and this can cause gassiness and bloating.  (Sorry – it’s just true!)

With Quest Chips and their perfectly pre-portioned packages, I’m able to satisfy that need for salty and crunchy, without overdoing it.  It’s definitely a bonus for me that they are baked, low-fat, low-carb, and high in satisfying + muscle-feeding protein.  (If I’m going to snack, I like to feel that it’s something fairly good for my body!)

The only thing is, they better not come out with full-sized bags, or I might have a problem with eating too much protein!  And, my friend, it’s still better not to overdo it with any kind of snack, no matter what kind.

Tuesday Yoga.

You know, twisty, bendy, stand-on-one-leg-and-try-not-to-fall yoga.  I love it.  It’s what makes Tuesday nights the best.

For the last couple months, I’ve been really into taking this yoga class at my local LA Fitness.  My wonderful instructor and friend, Ariel (@arielbowlin on Instagram) always makes the workout challenging but rejuvenating.  Which is basically the essence of yoga.  Just like I tell everyone as I’m evangelizing about the benefits of yoga, it makes you work and move in ways you didn’t know you could.  It’s one of the best ways to cross-train… with anything else.

You cycle?  Stretch your lower half and work your upper bod in yoga.  You lift?  Find muscle balance, recover through stretching, and mentally unwind in yoga.  You sit a lot?  Get your rear into gear, already, and get thee to a yoga class!  Sitting makes you way stiff and un-bendy.  Which is not good for anyone.

Monday Cycling.

I’ve been teaching cycling for three years now.  Holy beans, that’s a long time.  I actually started teaching that class after only taking two myself.  The first class I took was a beginner’s class, about 35 minutes long, and it nearly killed me.  Well… it felt like it, anyway.  The second one was the training class that taught me how to be an instructor.

After that, the new club that I was supposed to start at opened… so I had to jump right in and have a stab at it myself.  And I started telling jokes and stories during class to stave off of some of my awkwardness.

That was my Monday night class.  I’ve been teaching that class now for three. years.  I’ve taken more classes since then, from some wonderful instructors, and grew to love the format.

Last year's Halloween cycling class! We dressed up, there were prizes, I brought treats, many calories were torched.

Anyway, long story not as long, that Monday night class is my absolute favorite class of all time.  (Hey, class, are you reading this?)  We always get a good workout in, and it’s way fun – think HIIT x club dancing (minus the actual dancing) x outdoors adventure (minus the allergies).  Sometimes we even have class parties complete with costumes and healthy FitCakes treats.

Final statement: If you haven’t yet tried a cycling class, try it!  If you live in Tucson… come try mine!

Pink workout gear.

As a child, I was really not into pink.  I had anything but pink clothes – that was my sister’s thing.  Besides, I was already a small, blonde, girl-child, and I felt that wearing pink would only be one more count against me in terms of people taking me seriously.

Flash forward to about a year or two ago, when my husband tells me he actually likes me in pink, and I almost simultaneously receive several pink workout accessories.  Well, I suppose at this point I’ve come to terms with being small and blonde, and I’m no longer a child, so I give in.  What the heck… I could wear some pink!

Since then, I’ve managed to collect a lot of matching pink things.  You know, to compliment what I already had.  But, to tell the truth, the color has really grown on me!  I figure, as I deadlift, bench press, and curl more than most small blonde girls in the gym, you should already take me seriously… and maybe I like the irony of looking a little extra girly.  And maybe it just means you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover!

P.S.  I complete the look by using a little Hello Kitty notebook as my workout log, so I can mark down my 90 pound bench presses and 165 pound dead lifts.

Don’t forget! I have questions for you.  I’d loooove it if you shout back at me with your answers!
