1.       Convert yo' measurements!

Some common ones I always keep in mind:

  • 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
  • 1/4 cup = 4 tablespoons
  • 8 fluid ounces = 1 cup
  • 1 pound = 16 ounces

2.       Eyeball it!  (For reals.)

Use visuals:

  • 1 cup = baseball
  • 1/2 cup = ice cream scoop
  • 2 tablespoons/ one ounce = golf ball
  • 1 tablespoon = poker chip
  • 3 oz meat = deck of cards
  • 1 1/2 ounces cheese = three dice

3.       Scoop, pack, or spoon?

  • Scoop white sugar/ salt/ baking soda/ chocolate chips
  • Pack in brown sugar
  • Spoon flour into measuring cups

4.       Level with me!

Use a knife to level off the tops of measuring spoons or cups w/ dry ingredients

5.       Look it in the eye level.

Put the liquid measuring cup on a flat table and get down to its level to double check it... before you wreck it!

6.       You got to keep 'em separated.

Measure small stuff like salt or vanilla extract over a separate bowl - trust me, you don't want to spill too much on the cookie dough!

7.       When in doubt, weigh it out.

Invest a few bucks in a basic digital scale - it will save you more times than you know (like when you need ounces or grams!)

8.       How much, really?

For example:

1 cup chopped basil = CHOP the basil, then measure

1 cup basil, chopped = measure the basil, THEN chop
