Beef and Butternut Stew

Apparently there is such a thing as “stew season” and it is coming to a close, according to various sources such as the food magazines I read in grocery store checkout aisles.

I’d like to point out that, no matter what season it is, smack dab in the middle of winter or a sunny summer day, sometimes, I still like to have a hot meal here and there.

I mean, yeah, it’s not freezing out – our cold spell lasted all of two weeks this year, anyway – but that doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t make something delicious out of these wonderful ingredients that just happen to go so well together.

Seriously.  Do you even know about beef and butternut squash and peas and sage?  They’re like a fantastic four of the food world.  They kick some serious tastebud together.  

I had to share it with you now, because, well, you need this in your life.

Besides, it’s kind of St. Patrick’s Day today, and I think I’m somehow celebrating my heritage by way of making a stew in mid-March!  Does that make sense?

Anyway, all I know is, when you make a batch of this, you’ll either have a week of delightful meals for yourself or a really pleased family to serve this to!

Ever get that feeling of being totally owned by your schedule?  Kind of like being tied to the back of a rampaging gorilla that’s really not cool with you being tied to its back? 

Sometimes this feeling occurs to me.  It probably means I need a self-help book on time management. 

Anyway, this is the part where I announce to you the wonderful reason I’ve been so terrible at posting anything consistently for a while…

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am so very pleased to announce that today marks the official date that my very first cookbook is released!

YAY. 

I know I’ve been talking about it a bit, but this is kind of a lifelong dream come true here!  And I can tell you, it’s only the first big thing I’ll do this year.

Chances are, you haven’t tried sweet potatoes and blackberries together.  So chances are, you just haven’t lived.

Sure, that could be a slight overstatement, but with everything going on in this one little dessert I feel it’s totally acceptable if I err on the dramatic side.

For one thing, this combination of flavors is a wonderous, yet unnecessarily rare occurrence.  By the time spring rolls around, we’ve all but forgotten about sweet potatoes altogether, as healthy and tasty as they are.  They never so much as share a crisper drawer with a fresh blackberry.  Conversely, in late fall, there isn’t a fresh berry in sight, so we decide it must, therefore, be impossible to eat one.
